FISCHMAN FUND HONORS FATHER’S MEMORY
NEW JEWISH FOUNDATION FUND TO BENEFIT VETERANS AND JEWISH FEDERATION
Barry Fischman is giving to two organizations through the establishment of a donor advised fund with the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven. The Fischman Family Philanthropic Fund will first support a scholarship at the University of New Haven in memory of Barry’s father Sherwin S. Fischman. After the scholarship is fully funded, it then may continuing as a donor advised fund or become an endowment for the benefit of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven annual campaign (PACE).
“I am excited with the way this fund is structured, accomplishing many of my family’s giving objectives. My Dad was a veteran, and I am an alumnus of the UNH Masters Program. So to provide a scholarship in his memory which helps veterans has special meaning on a number of levels.” My Mom loved the idea as well, Barry explained.
In meeting with the Associate Director of Development of UNH, Barry learned that one of the biggest challenges veterans face when furthering their education is that there is a significant delay in reimbursement for funds expended on books. They are often required to pay for them in advance of classes. In addition to providing scholarships; the Fischman Family Philanthropic Fund will alleviate that concern by assisting the students in paying for the books up front.
“We are also longtime supporters of the Jewish Federation, where I currently serve as Treasurer. So we wanted to tie in that organization as well and give to the Greater New Haven Jewish community.”
To do that, they will direct a portion of income earned through the fund to various charities as directed from the family’s collective input and later to a PACE endowment for the benefit of the Jewish Federation. My children are excited to play a role in advising distributions from the fund.
The Fischman Family Philanthropic Fund demonstrates the spirit of giving in a creative, meaningful and purposeful way. It helps us remember our past, thanks those that have given selflessly, celebrates family and provides something for future generations.
